Use before and after to describe when things happen
Definition
A clock shows time using two hands. The short hand points to the hour; the long hand points to the minutes. There are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Telling the time keeps your whole day organised. Clocks, timetables and cooking timers all depend on it.
Key Rules:
- 1. The short hand is the hour; the long hand is the minutes.
- 2. Each number the minute hand passes is 5 minutes.
- 3. "Half past" is 30 minutes; "quarter past" is 15; "quarter to" is 45.
Remember:
- •When it is "half past", the hour hand sits between two numbers, not on one.
- •After 12 the clock starts again, 13:00 is 1 o’clock in the afternoon.
- •There are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100, time does not use tens.
Analogue clock
A clock with hands that move round a numbered face.
When the small hand points to 3 and the big hand to 12, the time is 3 o’clock.
