Use known number pairs to add ones quickly
Definition
Addition combines two or more amounts into a total. Number bonds, column addition and mental strategies all build on the same idea of putting quantities together.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Adding is how we put amounts together, from scores in games to coins in your pocket. It is the first tool you reach for in almost every maths problem.
Key Rules:
- 1. Adding can be done in any order: 5 + 3 = 3 + 5.
- 2. Line up the place-value columns and carry when a column passes 9.
- 3. Number bonds to 10 and 20 make bigger additions quick.
Remember:
- •A number line makes adding on visible, count the jumps.
- •Break awkward numbers apart: 47 + 36 is 47 + 30 + 6.
- •Estimate first (round the numbers) so you notice if an answer is wildly off.
