Understand that area is the space a shape covers
Definition
Area is the amount of flat space inside a shape. We measure it by counting the unit squares that fit inside; for a rectangle, area = width × height.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Area measures how much surface a shape covers. It tells you how much paint, carpet or wrapping paper you need.
Key Rules:
- 1. Area is measured in square units, such as cm².
- 2. Area of a rectangle = width × height; area of a triangle = ½ × base × height.
- 3. Split awkward shapes into rectangles and add the areas.
Remember:
- •Area is the inside of the shape, perimeter is the border.
- •Use the perpendicular height for a triangle, not the slanted side.
- •Keep units the same before calculating.
Area

A rectangle 4 cm by 3 cm has an area of 12 cm².
