Write an amount of money using a decimal point
Definition
Decimals extend place value beyond the ones column. The first digit after the point is tenths, the next is hundredths. 0.7 means seven tenths, the same as the fraction 710.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Decimals are how we write amounts between whole numbers, like money and measurements. Prices, heights and race times all use them.
Key Rules:
- 1. The decimal point separates whole numbers from parts of a whole.
- 2. Each column right of the point is ten times smaller: tenths, hundredths, thousandths.
- 3. Line up the decimal points when adding, subtracting or comparing.
Remember:
- •0.5 and 0.50 are equal, extra zeros on the right do not change the value.
- •More digits does not mean a bigger number: 0.45 is less than 0.5.
- •Decimals, fractions and percentages are three views of the same amount.
