Recognise when the parts make 1 whole
Definition
A fraction describes equal parts of a whole. The bottom number (denominator) says how many equal parts the whole is split into; the top number (numerator) says how many of those parts you have.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Fractions describe parts of a whole, like half a pizza or a quarter of an hour. They are everywhere in cooking, telling the time and sharing fairly.
Key Rules:
- 1. The larger the denominator, the smaller each part, quarters are smaller than halves.
- 2. Equivalent fractions show the same amount: multiply or divide top and bottom by the same number.
- 3. To add or subtract fractions, give them the same denominator first.
Remember:
- •A bigger bottom number does not mean a bigger fraction, 18 is less than 12.
- •Only the numerator and denominator change together stay equivalent.
- •A fraction is also a division: 34 means 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
Denominator

In 34 the denominator is 4.
