Work out the perimeter of a rectangle
Definition
Perimeter is the total distance around the edge of a shape. To find it, add up the lengths of every side, all the way around.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape. You need it to fence a garden, frame a picture or mark out a pitch.
Key Rules:
- 1. Perimeter is a length, so it is measured in units such as cm or m.
- 2. Add the length of every side, all the way around the shape.
- 3. For a rectangle, perimeter = 2 × (width + height).
Remember:
- •Perimeter is the border of the shape, not the inside.
- •Check every side has been counted exactly once.
- •Keep the units the same before adding.
Distance
How far it is from one place to another. At a steady speed, distance = speed × time.
The distance from home to school is 2 km.
