Angles

Definition

An angle measures an amount of turn between two lines, in degrees. Angle facts, like angles on a straight line adding to 180°, let you work out missing angles without measuring.

Why Do I Have to Learn This?

Angles measure turn, from door hinges to skate ramps. Reading them helps you build, draw and navigate accurately.

Key Rules:

  • 1. A full turn is 360°, a straight line is 180°, a right angle is 90°.
  • 2. Angles around a point add to 360°; angles in a triangle add to 180°.
  • 3. Vertically opposite angles are equal; parallel lines create equal alternate and corresponding angles.

Remember:

  • Common slip: measuring from the wrong zero on the protractor, start from the line.
  • Acute is smaller than 90°, obtuse is between 90° and 180°, reflex is bigger than 180°.
  • Always give a reason with the angle in written answers ("angles on a straight line").

Acute angle

An angle smaller than 90 degrees.

An angle of 45° is acute.

3 sides: angles add to 180°
