Statistics & Averages
Definition
Interpreting charts means reading bar charts, pictograms and tables to answer questions. You use the scale and labels to find the values.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Statistics turn piles of numbers into a story you can read. Charts and averages help you spot patterns and make fair comparisons.
Key Rules:
- 1. Read the title, labels and scale first.
- 2. Find the value each bar or picture shows.
- 3. Compare the categories to answer the question.
Remember:
- •Check what each square on the scale is worth.
- •In a pictogram, one picture can stand for several items.
- •The tallest bar shows the largest amount.
Average
A single value that stands for a whole set. Usually the mean: mean = total of the values ÷ how many values.
If three children score 5, 6 and 7 marks, the average (mean) score is 6.
