Addition

Definition

Addition is the process of combining two or more numbers to find the total. As numbers become larger, you can use mental strategies or written methods to add them accurately and efficiently.

Why Do I Have to Learn This?

Addition helps you work out totals, combine amounts and solve everyday problems. You might use addition when calculating the cost of several items, adding distances, keeping scores or working with measurements. It is one of the most important skills in mathematics and is used throughout everyday life.

Key Rules:

  • 1. Line up digits according to their place values.
  • 2. Start with the ones column when using a written method.
  • 3. Exchange (regroup) when a column totals 10 or more.
  • 4. Check that your answer is reasonable.

Remember:

  • Addition combines values together to find a total. Place value helps keep your calculations accurate.

Don’t Forget...

  • Don’t line digits up incorrectly.
  • Don’t forget to exchange when needed.
  • Don’t miss any numbers in the calculation.
