Coordinates
Definition
A transformation moves or changes a shape on the coordinate grid. A translation slides every point the same distance, a reflection flips the shape in a mirror line, and a rotation turns it about a fixed point.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Coordinates pinpoint an exact spot using two numbers. Maps, video games and treasure hunts all rely on them.
Key Rules:
- 1. A translation slides a shape without turning it.
- 2. A reflection flips a shape in a mirror line, such as the x-axis or the y-axis.
- 3. A rotation turns a shape through an angle about a centre point.
- 4. The shape stays exactly the same size under all three transformations.
Remember:
- •Describe a translation with a vector or with words such as "3 right, 2 up".
- •Corresponding points sit the same distance either side of the mirror line.
- •State the angle, the direction and the centre when describing a rotation.
Axis (axes)
The numbered lines running across and up a graph.
The bottom axis shows the days and the side axis shows how many books were read.
