Percentages
Definition
Fractions, decimals and percentages are three ways to write the same value. You can convert between them by dividing, multiplying by 100 or writing over 100.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Percentages compare amounts out of 100, so they make things easy to judge. Sales, test scores and phone batteries all speak in percent.
Key Rules:
- 1. Divide the top by the bottom to change a fraction to a decimal.
- 2. Multiply a decimal by 100 to make a percentage.
- 3. Write a percentage over 100 to make a fraction, then simplify.
Remember:
- •12, 0.5 and 50% are the same value.
- •Per cent means out of 100.
- •Learn common conversions like 14 = 25% by heart.
Per cent
Out of one hundred. 25 per cent means 25 out of 100, or 25100.
25 per cent is the same as 25100.
