Graphs & Quadratics
Definition
A linear graph is a straight line drawn from an equation of the form y = mx + c. The value m is the gradient and c is where the line crosses the y-axis.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Quadratics describe curves like the path of a thrown ball. Their graphs help us find the highest point, and where things land.
Key Rules:
- 1. Make a table of values to find points on the line.
- 2. Plot the points and join them with a straight line.
- 3. The equation y = mx + c gives the gradient and intercept.
Remember:
- •A steeper line has a larger gradient.
- •The line crosses the y-axis at the value of c.
- •All points on the line satisfy its equation.
Gradient
How steep a line is: how far it rises for each step across. Gradient = change in y ÷ change in x.
A line that goes up 6 for every 2 across has a gradient of 3.
