How to Start a New Maths Topic
Every new topic sits on an older one. Starting well means checking that the older one is solid.
In short
Find out what it builds on
Percentages need fractions. Trigonometry needs ratio. Check the earlier skill first.
Learn the words before the method
A topic is much harder when half the sentence is unfamiliar.
Do the simplest version first
Whole numbers, small values, no context. Get the shape of the method.
Keep one worked example you understand
You will want it again in two weeks.
Ask what it is for
Knowing what the maths is used for makes the method easier to hold on to.
Practise it the same day
The gap between the lesson and the first practice is where topics get lost.
